get a little bit of cardboard and draw a basic outline onto it
similar to this… you can make your own modifications if you like
… cut this out and trace make two of them onto the material (one for the front and one for the back).
cut these out sew mostly together, stuff close up and put some eyes, hair and whatever else on them.=]

I buy american girl doll sized patterns at wal*mart.
Theyre like a dollar each, and theyll fit any 18 inch doll.
Believe it or not, doll clothes have the same amount of work as a little girls outfit. And its hard to get inside those little sleeves, youll have to do hand sewing in a couple of spots that wont fit on the machine.
